ASSESSMENTS
Standards, in the healthcare setting, demand a high level of performance from providers. However, the clients in healthcare make choices; their accountability is a personal choice. In terms of patient education, Nursing assessments are made to evaluate patient and family understanding of taught skills or concepts. Formal, standardized testing is not performed. Nurse educators assess the patient and their families or caregivers for barriers to learning and learning style.
One exception is in CPR when a caregiver is "certified " as the result of a written test and skill competency. Another exception is in Pediatrics in which a Patient Educator or other healthcare provider determines skill competence so that the healthcare team is confident a child's healthcare needs will be properly managed at home. This assessment is made on behalf of the minor child. Participant competency is determined by the accurate return demonstration of taught skills and an appropriately demonstrated verbal understanding of taught skills and concepts by the caregivers and patient if age appropriate.
In this thematic unit, three assessments were developed.
- The first or Pre-test is a interview used to assess the participant's baseline understanding of seizures, general first aid, and care. This assessment is evaluative of baseline understanding, participant learning style, and barriers to learning (eg. fatigue, pain, anxiety, cognitive limitations, ect.)
- The second or "Post-test" was developed with the intent of reinforcing taught concepts and skills and to concretely assess learner understanding.
- The final assessment is an interactive assessment that explains common misconceptions about the diagnosis and care for children with seizure disorders. This assessment provides scientific rationale debunking common misconceptions.
- The rubric provides parameters for how well the content is explained and understood or comprehended by the learner. If the participant demonstrates below 75% proficiency on the rubric. Content will be reviewed and re-demonstrated in a way that better accommodates the learner's needs.
